B.J. Medical College is a premier medical college in Ahmedabad, India. There is also a BJ Medical College in Pune, India. It was originally founded as Ahmedabad Medical School in 1871. But, after the donation of Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy in 1879, the school was renamed as B.J. Medical School (BJMC). With the yearly intake of 250 students, BJMC is one of the biggest medical institutes in the country. It was affiliated with the Gujarat University in 1951 for undergraduates and for postgraduate studies in 1956.[1]
The college provides postgraduation in 15 branches of medicine (M.D.), five branches of surgery (M.S.), super specialty courses of D.M. in three branches, M.Ch in four branches, postgraduate diploma courses in 10 branches, and many other medical degrees for non-medical persons. It is a center for the National Board of Medical Examinations and the school has made major contributions in studies with the Indian Council of Medical Research. The The college has been recognized by World Health Organization for its innovation in integrated teaching along with various training programs on child health services and universal immunization.[2]

The B J Medical College in Ahmedabad will be among six such institutions in the country that will be upgraded on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. State Health and Family Welfare authorities say that the college will be spruced up and retrofitted over the next four years. The timeline of the project is around four years which will entail an investment of over 200 million USD. A master plan is being made by the government to refurbish the college’s 100-year-old infrastructure, which will also include a new super-specialty hospital. [3]
